Jordan boundaries Christy Ramsey

Today we went to a place set up to accomadate Pilgrims who wish to be baptized in the Jordan river. It is at the south end of the sea of Galliee where visitors to Israel can travel. To get to the river, warned our guide, you have to go through the gift shop. It was a serviceable place with several walks down into the river. One also had to exit through the gift shop.

The Jordan has always been a boundary. The crossing of the gift shop and the boundaries that it serves today for political divisions reminds me of the boundaries it served with Jesus - baptism accepting God's will, joining the church, becoming one with the movement and more ancient as the boundary into the promised land. To get to God you have to cross a boundary between self and God, between individual and community, between wandering in the desert and the promise land of God. I'll be thinking of what I have to do, to cross to get to where God wants me. What Jordans or gift shops I have to cross.
